Sept 2014

Now that we have almost a month under our belts, things are running smoothly on the 7th grade hallway. Curriculum Night had a terrific turnout; thank you, parents and relatives, for filling our classrooms with your interest- we do appreciate you taking the time to meet us and listen to what we have planned for your child(ren) this year (it's kind of rare that people willingly come to our rooms to listen to us... :-)

One way for you to make plans for each week is to check the different calendars we have posted on the NMS webpage. We are positively a fount of information- if you take 5 minutes to surf!

The overall school calendar of all events with Orchestra, Chorus, Band, Athletics, Drama, PTSA meetings, clubs- you name it- is on the bottom, right corner of the homepage:
http://school.fultonschools.org/ms/northwestern/Pages/default.aspx

This next calendar link shows when the tests and quizzes are for each grade level, by course title. We post one week in advance, so you have time to make plans for the future!
If your child is in 7th grade, but takes any 8th grade level classes, then you should click on the 8th grade calendar and look for the class title/subject name (i.e., Math, ELA, Science, etc.) to see when the next quiz or test is for that 8th grade subject. If your child takes a seventh grade level class, then you would only need click on the 7th grade level calendar and find the course name.  Please make sure to click on the individual entry to display the entries' full title- "On level" or "Advanced" classes may give quizzes/tests on different days!

The staff directory for teacher email and website addresses can be found here:
http://school.fultonschools.org/ms/northwestern/Pages/Directory.aspx

Please take the time to become acquainted with the NMS website. It can answer many questions for you!

If you have a question about one of your child's specific courses, then email your child's particular subject area teacher for answers.

Questions about 7th grade field trip dates or t-shirt orders, should be directed to the homeroom teacher.

Have a wonderful extended weekend!

A New Year!

Students and Parents:Tips for starting 7th grade on the right foot:

The building is not open to students or parents before 8:00am. Students must wait outside until 8am if dropped off any earlier than that. After 8:00, the doors open, and students report to the gym where they are seated until 8:35. Students are not permitted to wander around the building between 8:00 and 8:35. The cafeteria breakfast line opens at 8:25, so students can leave the gym at that time to go to breakfast, if they wish.

Once the help sessions begin, students must have a pass in order to be allowed down the academic hallways starting at 8:00. If student has no pass, then he or she will have to wait in the gym until 8:35.
Students: Make sure you get a pass from your teacher for your help session! More information to follow about the passes and help sessions in the coming weeks.

Classes begin at 8:55, with a warning bell at 8:50 to signal "time to go to first period." Students should make sure they've visited the restroom and taken care of any business (notes to office, clinic visits, checking in with other teachers, etc.) before school starts at 8:55. Students will be marked "unexcused tardy" if they are not in 1st period by then. Students can also take care of these types of tasks/errands during Pride (3rd period). Students arriving after 8:55 must be checked in by parents and get a pass to their first period class.

The students bring their own technology to school at their own risk. The school will not be held liable for any damage or loss that could occur when a student brings his or her electronics to school. Students are responsible for keeping up with their own property at all times. No adults will assume any responsibility for a students' personal electronic devices at any time when a student brings them to school.

Parents:
Student agendas have the class times and lunch time listed for 7th grade. Refer to it when scheduling doctor appointments so that you know what class change times are. Checking out during lunch is a bit tricky, so please be prepared to wait a little longer than usual if you pick up your child during lunch (11:04 - 11:45 approximately).

End of day check-outs: Please be aware that you must check out your child before 3:45. If it is after 3:45pm, the office has already begun their dismissal procedures and all their attention is devoted to this end-of-day process. They will not call into the classrooms after 3:45. Your best bet for emergencies after 3:45 is to text/email your child so that he or she gets the message before leaving at 4:05 dismissal. Phones ringers and alerts should be set to "silent" or "off" during school hours so that classes are not disrupted. We encourage students to leave their phones in their lockers when not needed to avoid the accidental phone ring in in class that causes disruptions or other issues. Please refer to electronics and phone usage policies in the Student Agenda for more information.

We encourage your child to accept responsibility for their learning, by using their agendas for every period and assignment due date. Students should have their agendas with them at all times during the school day to help them stay organized for each class. We encourage students to email their teachers directly to ask for help or clarification about assignments outside of school times. We also encourage the students to talk directly to the teacher when there are any issues or confusion about assignments or grades. Part of the process of growing up means accepting responsibility and taking steps to learn how to problem-solve. Please allow your child to take on as much of this responsibility as he or she can. We will support your child through the year and want the chance to build a strong relationship with your child, so that their self-confidence grows with the new levels of independence they experience along the way. Parents can email teachers to give them a "heads-up" about any concerns their child may have, and that can pave the way for a good conversation between the student and teacher. Our goal is for your child to experience all the success he or she can handle!
August 2014!  Welcome to 7th Grade!
NOW THAT WE ARE UNDERWAY:

Each morning, the hallways are filled with students clamoring to get to their teachers' help sessions. We are very happy to see students taking responsibility for their learning. Teachers love when their help sessions are filled because it means students are interested in doing their best!
Since each teacher has a specified day and time to offer a help session, it is very important that students write down those days and times in their agendas.

Procedures for attending help sessions:
Teachers will sign a pass for any student who wants to come to a help session. Students will not be allowed down the academic hallway between 8:00 and 8:38 am without a teacher-signed pass in agenda for a help session.  Student safety and welfare are our first concerns, and because teachers are conducting help sessions and the remaining teachers not holding help sessions have other morning responsibilities/duties, we require that all students remain in a supervised location (the gym or café), until they are dismissed at 8:38 to go to their lockers.

Helping students complete assignments:
Sometimes students need to print something at home in order to complete an assignment, and sometimes the printer at home isn't working, out of ink, don't have one, etc.  There is no need to panic! There are many ways to solve this dilemma! Unless printing is stipulated, the student can always write out the work by hand! Easy fix! But if printing is the way to go, here are options:

Once the student has saved the completed assignment onto a flash drive, and emailed it to him/herself as a back up, the student can easily solve this printing problem by having a parent sign a pass to allow printing in the media center between 8:00 and 8:35am. The student can then use the computers and printer in the media center to print the assignment in time for class that day. Problem solved! Students are allowed 2 pages free per day. After that, it's .10 cents per page. Color printing is available for .25 cents per page (no free color pages).

When the media center is closed for meetings, the student then has other options:

  1. When the students are dismissed from the gym at 8:35, the student can go down to one of their teachers to ask them if they may use a classroom computer to print their work. Students have "free time" from 8:35 to 8:50 to take care of all personal business before class starts. After 8:50, it's too late to ask to print.
  2. During Pride (3rd period), the student can ask their pride teacher to use the classroom computer to print out assignment.
  3. During Pride, the student can ask their pride teacher to sign a pass to the media center during lunch to go print from the media center. Student can go eat lunch and then use the signed pass to leave the café and go the media center to print. No signed pass? No leaving the cafe during lunch. Plan ahead.
  4. Student can go to the 125 Lab with Ms. Robbins for Pass AM help Monday through Friday from 8:00-8:40am. This is only if the media center is closed, because Pass AM is a scheduled help session with assigned students.
  5. Tell the teacher WHEN the assignment is assigned (not the day it's due) that you have printer problems, and ask that teacher if you may email the finished assignment to them directly. Teachers cannot stop instruction to print out your work for you once class starts, so talk to them in the morning about when to print if email is allowed. This is the last resort option, because teachers do not have unlimited printing rights, and toner is one of the greatest expenses the school incurs. If you don't ask the teacher for permission to email the assignment before the due date, then you need to print using option 1-4 above.
As you can see, there are many options available to students when printers behave badly, and our goal is to teach independence and responsibility, so, the old,  "my printer didn't work last night" excuse? not so much...
Please help us help students take responsibility for all their assignments. It's a win-win for everyone! And keep coming to those help sessions! :-)
