NOW THAT WE ARE UNDERWAY:
Each morning, the hallways are filled with students clamoring to get to their teachers' help sessions. We are very happy to see students taking responsibility for their learning. Teachers love when their help sessions are filled because it means students are interested in doing their best!
Since each teacher has a specified day and time to offer a help session, it is very important that students write down those days and times in their agendas.
Procedures for attending help sessions:
Teachers will sign a pass for any student who wants to come to a help session. Students will not be allowed down the academic hallway between 8:00 and 8:38 am without a teacher-signed pass in agenda for a help session. Student safety and welfare are our first concerns, and because teachers are conducting help sessions and the remaining teachers not holding help sessions have other morning responsibilities/duties, we require that all students remain in a supervised location (the gym or café), until they are dismissed at 8:38 to go to their lockers.
Helping students complete assignments:
Sometimes students need to print something at home in order to complete an assignment, and sometimes the printer at home isn't working, out of ink, don't have one, etc. There is no need to panic! There are many ways to solve this dilemma! Unless printing is stipulated, the student can always write out the work by hand! Easy fix! But if printing is the way to go, here are options:
Once the student has saved the completed assignment onto a flash drive, and emailed it to him/herself as a back up, the student can easily solve this printing problem by having a parent sign a pass to allow printing in the media center between 8:00 and 8:35am. The student can then use the computers and printer in the media center to print the assignment in time for class that day. Problem solved! Students are allowed 2 pages free per day. After that, it's .10 cents per page. Color printing is available for .25 cents per page (no free color pages).
When the media center is closed for meetings, the student then has other options:
- When the students are dismissed from the gym at 8:35, the student can go down to one of their teachers to ask them if they may use a classroom computer to print their work. Students have "free time" from 8:35 to 8:50 to take care of all personal business before class starts. After 8:50, it's too late to ask to print.
- During Pride (3rd period), the student can ask their pride teacher to use the classroom computer to print out assignment.
- During Pride, the student can ask their pride teacher to sign a pass to the media center during lunch to go print from the media center. Student can go eat lunch and then use the signed pass to leave the café and go the media center to print. No signed pass? No leaving the cafe during lunch. Plan ahead.
- Student can go to the 125 Lab with Ms. Robbins for Pass AM help Monday through Friday from 8:00-8:40am. This is only if the media center is closed, because Pass AM is a scheduled help session with assigned students.
- Tell the teacher WHEN the assignment is assigned (not the day it's due) that you have printer problems, and ask that teacher if you may email the finished assignment to them directly. Teachers cannot stop instruction to print out your work for you once class starts, so talk to them in the morning about when to print if email is allowed. This is the last resort option, because teachers do not have unlimited printing rights, and toner is one of the greatest expenses the school incurs. If you don't ask the teacher for permission to email the assignment before the due date, then you need to print using option 1-4 above.
Please help us help students take responsibility for all their assignments. It's a win-win for everyone! And keep coming to those help sessions! :-)
